How Ark Nova scores
Ark Nova does not total up categories at the end. You push two counters along the board from opposite directions - appeal, which climbs as you build enclosures and play animals, and conservation, which comes down as you finish conservation projects and release animals. The game ends the moment one player's two counters land in the same scoring area or pass each other, and your final score is your appeal value minus the target number of the scoring area your conservation counter sits in. Most players finish on a negative number, and that is completely normal.
The whole score is one subtraction
Find the scoring area where your conservation counter is parked and read the lowest appeal value in that area - that is your target number. Subtract it from your appeal value and you have your victory points. If your conservation counter has moved past your appeal counter you finish positive; if it has not, you finish negative, and a final score of -20 is an ordinary result rather than a disaster.
One conservation point is worth about three appeal
The conservation track is laid out against the appeal track so that a single conservation point pulls your counter down by roughly three appeal spaces. That exchange rate is the game: an action giving 1 conservation point is worth about three times as much as an action giving 1 appeal. The spacing is not perfectly uniform along the track, so read the board rather than assuming a flat rate. New players almost always over-invest in appeal because it climbs faster and feels like progress.
Triggering the end gives everyone else a free turn
The game ends as soon as a player's conservation and appeal counters occupy the same scoring area or cross. If that happens at the end of your turn, every other player takes one more turn and then you go straight to final scoring instead of taking your next turn. If it happens during a break, all players take one more turn. So closing the game hands each opponent an extra action - pick the turn where their answer cannot beat your margin.
Appeal alone is not the scoreboard, and reputation is not either
A player far ahead on appeal can easily be last, because appeal only means something measured against their own conservation counter. Reputation is a third track entirely - it controls how far down the display you can reach when taking cards - and it scores nothing at the end. Note also that starting appeal is set by turn order: the start player begins on 0, the second player on 1, third on 2, fourth on 3, which is a genuine head start in the final subtraction.
What Marine Worlds changes, and what it does not
Marine Worlds adds sea animals as their own animal category, new zoo maps, and replacement conservation, sponsor and final-scoring cards - several of them easier to max out than their base-game equivalents. The scoring machinery is untouched: same two counters, same appeal-minus-target subtraction, same end trigger. It also reprints base cards with a new all-animals icon so older conservation projects and end-game scoring cards read correctly once sea animals are in the mix.
