How Rummy scores

In basic Rummy the player who goes out scores the total value of the cards still stuck in everyone else's hands: face cards 10, aces 1, number cards their face value. Hands repeat until someone reaches an agreed target, usually 100 or 500. The popular 500 Rum variant scores differently, counting the melds you laid down minus the cards left in your own hand, so scores there can go negative.

  • Counting the cards left in hand

In standard Rummy only the player who goes out scores, and they collect the total of every opponent's unmelded cards. Kings, queens and jacks count 10 each, aces count 1, and number cards count face value. Cards already melded or laid off onto someone else's meld do not count, which is why dumping a king onto an existing set late in the hand is worth doing even when it does not help you go out.

  • Going rummy

Laying your whole hand down in a single turn, having melded and laid off nothing earlier in that hand, is "going rummy" and earns a bonus. The most common bonus doubles the score for the hand; other groups add a flat 10 or 25 instead. Because the bonus is a house choice, settle it before the deal rather than after someone actually pulls it off.

  • 500 Rum works completely differently

In 500 Rum your points come from the cards you meld rather than from what your opponents hold, and the cards left in your own hand are subtracted from that. Aces count 15, tens and face cards 10, and number cards their face value, with the exception of an ace played low in an A-2-3 run, which counts 1. Because the subtraction hits your own score, a bad hand can produce a negative round and even a negative running total.

  • Penalty scoring, the other common way

Plenty of families reverse the whole thing: everyone counts the cards left in their own hand as penalty points, the player who went out scores zero, and play continues until someone crosses 100. Lowest total wins. It is the same arithmetic recorded against each player instead of for one, and it has the advantage of keeping every player on the score sheet every hand.

  • Agree the card values first

Aces are the usual argument. They are 1 point in standard Rummy, but plenty of house rules score them at 11 or 15, especially at tables that allow ace-high runs. Jokers used as wild cards are commonly 15 or 20 penalty points. None of these are wrong, but an ace-heavy final hand can swing a round by 30 or more, so the values need settling before the first deal, not during the count.
