Uno is scored round by round: whoever goes out first banks the value of every card still in the other players' hands. Number cards count their printed value, Skip, Reverse and Draw Two count 20 each, and Wilds count 50. First player to 500 points wins the match, although the published alternative method has each player score their own leftover cards instead.
What each card is worth
Number cards 0 through 9 score their printed value. Skip, Reverse and Draw Two score 20 each. Wild and Wild Draw Four score 50 each. Decks that include the newer Wild Shuffle Hands or Wild Customizable cards score those at 40. Only cards still in hand when someone goes out are counted; everything already on the discard pile is irrelevant.
Two ways to score, both official
In the standard method the round winner collects the total of everyone else's remaining cards and the first player to 500 wins. Mattel also prints an alternative in which each player counts their own leftover cards against themselves, anyone reaching 500 is eliminated, and the last player standing wins. They play out very differently: the first rewards finishing fast, the second punishes sitting on high-value Wilds.
Targets other than 500
500 is the published target, but 300 makes for a shorter session and 1000 for a longer one, and some groups just play a set number of rounds and compare totals. Pick before the first deal, because the target and the scoring method together decide whether holding a 50-point Wild in reserve is clever or expensive.
Penalties are cards, not points
Forgetting to call "Uno" and being caught before the next player takes their turn costs 4 cards from the draw pile, not a point penalty. Playing a Wild Draw Four while holding a card of the current colour is a bluff the next player may challenge: if the challenge is correct the bluffer draws the 4 cards instead, and if it is wrong the challenger draws 6. Neither changes the score directly, but those cards become points if the round ends soon after.
House rules that change the maths
Stacking Draw Twos, swapping hands on a 0 or 7, and drawing until you can play are all house rules rather than official ones, and each changes what a round is worth. Stacking in particular produces enormous final hands, so one round can settle a 500-point match on its own. Note the house rules on the score sheet, because they are the usual source of "that is not how we scored it last time".
