How Catan scores

Catan is a race to 10 victory points in the base game, and you can only declare the win on your own turn. Settlements are 1 VP and cities 2, Longest Road and Largest Army are 2 each, and every victory point development card is 1. There is no end-of-game scoring round - the game simply stops the moment someone announces they are there.

  • Where the ten points come from

A settlement is 1 VP and upgrading it to a city makes it 2. Longest Road and Largest Army are 2 VP each. Victory point development cards are 1 each and there are five of them in the deck. Nobody adds anything up at the end: the first player to reach the target on their own turn wins immediately.

  • Hidden victory point cards

Victory point development cards stay face down in your hand until they win you the game. On the turn you can reach the target you reveal them all at once. This is the swing that catches new players out - a player sitting on eight visible points may already be at ten. Count how many development cards each player has bought, not just what is on the board.

  • Longest Road and Largest Army move around

Longest Road goes to the first player with an unbroken chain of at least five road segments, and it only changes hands when someone strictly beats the current holder. An opponent can also take it off you by building a settlement on a junction in the middle of your road, which splits the chain. Largest Army works the same way from three played knights up, and unplayed knight cards sitting in your hand count for nothing.

  • You can only win on your own turn

The official FAQ is explicit that victory is declared on your turn. If a trade or a broken road pushes you to the target while someone else is playing, you wait for your turn to come round. That matters when Longest Road is bouncing back and forth, because the player holding it when their own turn arrives is the one who gets to win with it.

  • Expansions change the target

The base game plays to 10, and the 5-6 player extension keeps that target while adding a build phase between turns. Cities & Knights raises it to 13 and adds metropolises worth 2 VP each plus Defender of Catan cards worth 1. Seafarers scenarios set their own targets, usually somewhere between 12 and 14, and hand out points for settling new islands. Agree on the number before setup, because it changes how hard people chase the two bonus cards.
