How Cartographers scores

Cartographers is a flip-and-write played over four seasons, and you score at the end of every season rather than only at the end of the game. Four scoring cards - edicts A, B, C and D - are laid out at setup, and each season scores exactly two of them, so every card is used twice across the game. Each season you also add 1 point per coin on your track and subtract 1 point per empty space next to a monster, and the four season totals add together for your final score.

  • The four seasons and their time limits

A season ends as soon as the total time value of the explore cards revealed that season reaches or passes its threshold: 8 in Spring, 8 in Summer, 7 in Autumn, 6 in Winter. Explore cards are worth 1 or 2 time each, so the later seasons are meaningfully shorter and give you fewer placements. Anything you are hoping to finish in Winter needs most of its groundwork laid in Autumn.

  • Two edicts per season, each card scored twice

Spring scores edicts A and B, Summer scores B and C, Autumn scores C and D, and Winter scores D and A. That overlap is the whole planning problem: card B pays out in both Spring and Summer, so terrain that serves it early counts twice, while card D does nothing at all until Autumn. Read all four scoring cards before your first placement rather than looking them up season by season.

  • Coins compound across seasons

Every filled coin symbol on your coin track is worth 1 point at the end of every remaining season, so a coin earned in Spring scores four times and one earned in Winter scores once. Coins come from two places: choosing the smaller of the two shapes an explore card offers, and completely surrounding a mountain space on all four adjacent sides. An early coin is quietly worth more than most individual scoring-card points, which makes taking the small shape in Spring far less of a sacrifice than it looks.

  • Monsters cost you every season too

When an ambush card is revealed you pass your map sheet to the neighbour the arrow points toward, and they draw the monster shape onto your map wherever they like. At the end of each season you lose 1 point for every empty space orthogonally adjacent to a monster space. Because that penalty is charged in every season from then on, an early ambush is much more expensive than a late one. The answer is not to avoid monsters but to fill in around them - a monster boxed in by terrain costs nothing at all.

  • Season totals accumulate, they do not replace

Each season's score is first edict plus second edict plus coins minus monster penalties, and the four season scores are added together for the final total. Nothing resets between seasons - the map, the coin track, and the monsters all carry forward, which is why a season can score well and still leave you behind. Ties at the end go to the player who lost the fewest points to empty spaces beside monsters.
