How Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion scores

Jaws of the Lion is a campaign, not a game with a final score. A scenario ends with the party completing the objective or being exhausted, and nothing is totalled or compared between players. What carries forward is per character: experience, gold, check marks toward perks, level, and the items and scenarios you have unlocked. A record kept for Jaws of the Lion is a progression log, not a ranking.

  • There is no score and no winner

Every scenario is fully cooperative. You either complete the objective or every character is exhausted and the party loses, and either way there is no per-player total to compare. Any number you write down next to a character - experience, gold, checks - describes that character's progress, not their standing against the others. Playing it as a competition between party members works directly against the deck-management puzzle the game is built on.

  • Experience is per character and never decreases

Characters earn experience during a scenario from ability-card actions that show an XP value, and a bonus on success equal to 4 plus twice the scenario level, so 6 XP on scenario level 1. A character can never lose experience, and levelling up does not reset the running total - the thresholds are printed on the character sheet, with level 2 arriving at 45 XP. Because scenario level scales the bonus, the same scenario is worth noticeably more XP played on a harder setting.

  • Gold is looted, not awarded

Money tokens are placed during setup and whenever a monster dies, and a character only gets one by moving onto its hex - there is no end-of-scenario split. After the scenario each token converts to gold; through the introductory scenarios each is worth 2 gold, and the conversion rate rises with scenario level. Most scenarios also pay a flat gold reward per character on top of what was looted. Gold and money tokens cannot be shared, though unlike base Gloomhaven, items can be traded between characters between scenarios.

  • Check marks and perks are the long-term track

At the start of each scenario every character secretly draws a battle goal. Complete it and win the scenario and you record one check mark on your character sheet; lose the scenario and battle goals pay nothing. Every third check mark unlocks a perk, and a character caps at 18 check marks, so six perks come from battle goals over a full campaign. You gain another perk at every level-up. Perks modify your attack modifier deck rather than adding points to anything.

  • What Jaws of the Lion deliberately does not track

There are no personal quests, no reputation, and no city prosperity, so nothing town-wide climbs alongside the characters. Item prices are fixed because there is no reputation discount to apply, and new items and scenarios unlock from campaign milestones instead of a prosperity level. The complete campaign state is: which scenarios are done, and for each character their level, experience, gold, check marks, perks, ability cards, and items.
