Golf borrows the idea its name suggests: your cards are strokes and you want as few of them as possible. Each round you total the grid in front of you, with kings scoring 0, twos usually scoring minus 2, and matching cards in the same column cancelling to nothing. Nine rounds make a full game and the lowest cumulative score wins.
Card values in the six-card game
Six-card Golf is the most widely published version, and its values are: king 0, ace 1, two minus 2, threes through tens their face value, jack and queen 10. That makes kings and twos the cards worth grabbing and face cards the ones worth dumping. Jokers are a house addition rather than part of the standard deck, and their value varies (minus 2 and minus 5 are both common), so agree on it before dealing.
Matching cards cancel out
In six-card Golf, two cards of the same rank in the same column score zero for that column regardless of how high they are. A pair of queens that would have been 20 becomes nothing, which is the main way big scores get erased. The rule applies to twos as well, so pairing your two 2s throws away the minus 4 you would otherwise have banked.
Four-card, six-card and nine-card differ
Four-card Golf uses a two-by-two grid and leans heavily on memory, since the cards start face down. Six-card is the standard two-by-three layout. Nine-card uses a three-by-three grid, and many tables extend the cancel rule there so a matching column, row or even diagonal scores zero. Card values are broadly the same across all three, but the cancellation shape is not, so that is the first thing to settle at a new table.
Ending a round and ending a game
A round ends when one player has all their cards face up, and most rules give everyone else one final turn before scoring. Nine rounds, called holes, make the traditional game, matching a nine-hole round of golf, though eighteen works for a longer session. Because the winner is decided on the cumulative total rather than a target, one disastrous hole is survivable in a way it would not be in a race-to-a-number game.
Common mistakes and a popular house rule
The most frequent error is scoring a cancelled column as the sum of its two cards instead of zero; totalling column by column rather than card by card avoids it. The second is treating kings as 13 out of habit when they are worth nothing. A widespread house rule adds a penalty for closing the round: if the player who went out first does not have the lowest score that hole, their score for the hole is doubled, which discourages flipping out early on a mediocre grid.
