Hearts is a trick-taking game where you are trying to avoid points rather than collect them. Every heart you capture is worth 1 penalty point and the queen of spades is worth 13, so exactly 26 points go out every deal. Hands repeat until someone crosses 100, and the lowest total wins.
The 26 points in every deal
Thirteen hearts at 1 point each plus the queen of spades at 13 makes exactly 26 penalty points per hand. That total doubles as a check: if the round does not add up to 26, someone miscounted a trick. Shooting the moon is the only case that redistributes those 26 rather than changing the total.
Shooting the moon
If one player captures all thirteen hearts and the queen of spades, they score 0 and every opponent takes 26 instead. Many groups let the shooter choose to subtract 26 from their own score instead, which matters when adding 26 to everyone would end the game with the shooter still behind. Decide which version you use before the first deal, because the two produce very different endgames.
Who the points belong to
Points go to whoever wins the trick, not whoever played the card. A heart you throw away belongs to the player who takes that trick, and the same is true of the queen of spades. Keeping each player's captured tricks in one face-down pile and counting at the end of the hand settles almost every scoring argument before it starts.
When the game ends
The game finishes at the end of the hand in which any player reaches or passes 100 points, and the lowest score wins. Shorter games to 50 are common when you only have time for a few deals, and some groups play a fixed number of hands instead. If two players tie at or above the target, most tables play extra hands until the tie breaks.
Omnibus and other variants
The most common variant is Omnibus Hearts, which makes the jack of diamonds worth minus 10 and gives the round one card worth chasing. In most Omnibus rules the shooter must also take the jack to shoot the moon, which makes a successful shot considerably harder. "Shooting the sun", taking all thirteen tricks, is sometimes scored at 52 instead of 26, but that is a house addition rather than a standard rule.
