How Love Letter scores
Love Letter is not scored in points. You win rounds and collect tokens of affection, and the first player to reach the token target wins the game. A round ends when the deck runs out or when only one player is left standing, and the survivor holding the highest-value card takes the token. The target depends on the player count and on which edition of the game you own.
Tokens, not points
Each round produces a winner who takes exactly one token. Nothing else carries over: not the value of the cards in your discard pile, not how many players you knocked out, not how long you survived. A round you lose costs you nothing except that round, which is why the game rewards taking cheap shots rather than playing safe.
How many tokens you need
The original 16-card game asks for 7 tokens at two players, 5 at three and 4 at four. The 2019 edition, which adds the Spy and the Chancellor and supports up to six players, uses 6 / 5 / 4 / 3 / 3 for two through six. If you play the 2019 box with its classic 16-card setup, the rulebook keeps the newer targets rather than reverting to 7 / 5 / 4, so it is worth saying out loud which number you are playing to.
Two ways to win a round
If every other player has been knocked out, the round ends immediately and you take the token. Otherwise, after the turn on which the deck empties, everyone still in reveals their hand and the highest card wins. That is what makes the Princess both the best and the worst card to hold: she wins any showdown outright, but you are out of the round the moment you play or discard her.
Ties changed between editions
In the original game a tie at the reveal is broken by comparing the total value of the tied players' discard piles, and the higher total takes the token. The 2019 edition dropped that entirely: all tied players win the round and each gains a token, which means two people can cross the target on the same round and share the win. Worth checking your rulebook, because it comes up more often than you would expect.
The Spy is the one card that scores on its own
In the 2019 edition, if you are the only player still in the round at the end who played or discarded a Spy, you gain an extra token. It does not count as winning the round - the round winner still takes theirs - and playing two Spies still only earns you one. You do have to survive to the end of the round to collect it. The original 16-card deck has no Spy at all.
