How Monopoly scores

Standard Monopoly has no score at all: you play until every other player has gone bankrupt and the last player solvent wins. Because that takes hours, most groups stop early and tally net worth instead - cash, plus property at the price printed on the board, plus buildings at purchase price, with mortgaged deeds counted at half. The official rulebook uses exactly that tally for its timed short game, so it is the closest thing to an official Monopoly score sheet.

  • The standard game has no points

By the official rules the game ends when the second-to-last player goes bankrupt. The survivor wins outright and nothing is added up. Everything people think of as a Monopoly score comes from the rulebook's shortened variants or from house rules, so if you want a number at the end, agree on a stopping point before the first roll.

  • How to tally net worth

The rulebook's timed short game values each player's holdings as: cash on hand, plus unmortgaged lots, railroads and utilities at the price printed on the board, plus mortgaged property at half the printed price, plus houses at purchase price, plus hotels at purchase price plus the value of the houses turned in for them. Richest player wins. The two things groups forget are the half-price mortgage rule and that a hotel is worth much more than its own price because it swallowed four houses.

  • Bankruptcy is not a scoring event

If you owe more than you can raise by selling buildings and mortgaging, you are bankrupt and out. Owe another player and you hand them everything: cash, title deeds and Get Out of Jail Free cards. Owe the Bank and the Bank takes it all and auctions off every property it seized, which puts those deeds back into play instead of freezing them.

  • Free Parking is a house rule

Officially, landing on Free Parking does nothing at all. There is no jackpot and no pot of taxes and fees in the middle of the board. That house rule is probably the most common Monopoly variant anywhere, and it makes games run much longer because it keeps pumping money back into circulation. Collecting double salary for landing exactly on Go is the same story - the official amount is the usual salary either way.

  • The rules people skip that change the totals

When a player lands on an unowned property and declines to buy it, the official rules require the Banker to auction it immediately, and everyone can bid including the player who passed. Groups that skip auctions leave half the board unsold, which drags the game out and flattens every net-worth total. Also official but widely ignored: the Bank holds only 32 houses and 12 hotels, and when they run short the remaining buildings go to the highest bidder rather than to whoever asks first.
