How Root scores

Root is a race to 30 victory points, but each faction earns them from a completely different engine - the Marquise from buildings, the Eyrie from roosts, the Alliance from sympathy, the Vagabond from quests and relationships. Two sources pay everyone: crafting an item scores the VP printed on the card, and removing any enemy building or token scores 1 VP. A player who activates a dominance card leaves the VP track behind entirely and wins by ruling clearings instead.

  • Marquise de Cat: the building tracks are the score track

Every time the Marquise places a sawmill, workshop, or recruiter, she scores the VP printed on the space it uncovers on her faction board. The values climb as a track empties, so the fourth workshop is worth more than the first and her scoring rate accelerates the longer she is left alone. This is why pressure on wood production early is worth more than a big battle late - cut the sawmills and the whole board stops paying out.

  • Eyrie Dynasties: roosts pay every Evening, Turmoil takes it back

In Evening the Eyrie score the VP on the rightmost empty space of their Roosts track, so their income is a fixed tick every single turn based on roosts standing on the map. The cost is the Decree: if you cannot resolve every card in it during Daylight you fall into Turmoil, and the first step is Humiliate - lose 1 VP per bird card in the Decree, counting both Loyal Viziers. A bloated Decree can swing five or more points in one collapse, which is why Eyrie scores go up in a staircase and then fall off a cliff.

  • Woodland Alliance: sympathy is the score track

Placing a sympathy token scores the VP on the space it uncovers on the Alliance faction board, and like the Marquise those spaces get more valuable as the track empties. Opponents are paid 1 VP for each sympathy token they remove, so tearing it down is genuinely profitable - but doing so triggers Outrage and feeds the Alliance supporters, which is exactly the fuel it needs for the next revolt. The Alliance is usually the faction whose score everyone else is quietly living off.

  • Vagabond: quests, aid, and hostility

Completing a quest lets you choose between drawing two cards or scoring 1 VP per completed quest of that suit including the one just finished, so stacking quests of a single suit turns into a rising payout rather than a flat one. Aiding a faction advances its relationship marker and scores the VP printed on the new space. Once a faction is Hostile toward you, you score an extra VP for every piece of theirs you remove in battle, on top of the normal 1 VP for buildings and tokens.

  • Dominance cards replace the VP win condition

During your Daylight, with at least 10 VP, you may play a dominance card into your play area. Your score marker comes off the track and you can no longer win on points at all: instead you win at the start of your Birdsong if you rule three clearings of the card's suit, or two clearings in opposite corners for the bird dominance card. Groups forget this constantly and keep tracking a number for a player who no longer has one. The Vagabond can also use a dominance card to form a coalition instead, giving up their own score to win alongside another player.
