How Skyjo scores

Skyjo is a low-score game played over several rounds. Each round every player works a grid of twelve cards worth -2 to 12 and tries to finish with the smallest total, and each round total is added to a running tally. The game stops after the round in which any player reaches 100 or more, and the lowest cumulative total wins.

  • How a round is scored

Each card in your grid is worth its printed value, from -2 up to 12, and your round score is the sum of the cards still in front of you once everything is revealed. Negative cards subtract, so a round score can easily come out below zero. That figure is added to your running total, and the running total is the only thing that decides the game.

  • Three of a kind clears a column

When a vertical column of three shows the same number face up, that entire column is discarded on the spot and scores nothing. It works at any value, including three 12s, which removes 36 points in one move and is the biggest single swing in the game. A cleared column also shrinks your grid, so you have fewer cards left to flip when you want to end the round.

  • The doubling penalty

The player who flips their last card ends the round; everyone else takes one final turn and then all cards are revealed. If the player who ended the round does not have the lowest total on their own, their round score is doubled - and a tie for lowest is not good enough, it has to be strictly lowest. The one relief is that the doubling only applies to a positive score, so ending on zero or a negative total is always safe.

  • How the game ends

The game ends after the round in which any player's cumulative total reaches 100 or more. That round is always played out in full, and then the lowest cumulative total wins - not the player who crossed 100, and not the winner of the final round. Because the totals accumulate, one bad round of thirty-plus can decide someone's game two rounds before it actually finishes.

  • What is actually in the deck

The 150 cards are 5 copies of -2, 10 copies of -1, 15 copies of 0, and 10 copies of each value from 1 to 12. Four fifths of the deck is a positive number and the average card sits just above 5, which is why a face-down card is usually worse than it looks and why holding a 6 or 7 is closer to neutral than to bad. Skyjo Action layers action cards on top of the same number cards; the round total is still the sum of your grid.
