How Viticulture scores

Viticulture is a race to 20 victory points, and nearly all of them come from filling wine orders and playing visitor cards. Reaching 20 does not stop play - the game runs to the end of that year, so everyone gets their remaining seasons before totals are compared. Highest score wins, with ties broken by lira, then wine in the cellar, then grapes on the crush pad. These notes describe the Essential Edition, the printing most tables use.

  • Wine orders are the engine, visitors are the rest

Each wine order card shows the victory points it pays and how far it bumps your residual payment track, and a mature cellar filling two or three orders a year is how most 20-point games are actually won. Visitor cards are the second source - some hand you points directly, others convert grapes, wine or lira into points. Two structures pay a slow trickle: the Windmill gives 1 VP each time you plant a vine (once per year) and the Tasting Room gives 1 VP when you give a tour with at least one wine in your cellar (once per year).

  • Residual payments are money, not points

The residual payment tracker pays you lira at the end of every year, capped at 5. It gets misremembered constantly because filling a wine order advances your victory points and your residual track in the same action, so the two feel like one reward. They are not: residuals never convert to VP. Their value is that they quietly fund the workers and structures that go on to produce VP.

  • Wake-up row 6 is a point every single year

Choosing the sixth row on the wake-up chart pays 1 VP immediately, and it pays again every year you choose it. Over a full game that is a real slice of the 20 you need, and it is the only VP source that costs nothing but position. The trade is that you wake up late, so the strongest worker-placement spaces are usually gone by the time your first worker goes down.

  • The trigger is checked at the end of the year, not the moment you cross 20

Play continues through the rest of the year once someone reaches 20 - remaining winter placements included. Since Fill Wine Order is a winter action, a player who crosses 20 early in winter can still be overtaken by an opponent placing after them. Before you take the turn that closes the game, count what everyone still sitting to your left can fill.

  • Ties go to lira first, then wine, then grapes

If two players finish level on victory points, the one with the most lira wins. Still tied, compare the total value of wine in the cellar, and after that the total value of grapes on the crush pad. Because of that order it is worth finishing with a couple of lira in hand rather than spending down to zero on your last turn when the game looks close.
