Spades is bid-and-make: each side commits to a number of tricks before the hand and scores 10 points per trick bid if it gets there. Overtricks are worth 1 point each but also accumulate as bags, and every ten bags costs 100 points. Miss the bid and you lose 10 per trick bid instead; the first side to 500 wins.
Making and missing the bid
A side that takes at least as many tricks as it bid scores 10 points per trick bid. Bid 5 and take 5 and you score 50; bid 5 and take 7 and you score 52. Fall a single trick short and the entire bid goes negative: bid 5 and take 4 and you lose 50. There is no partial credit, which is why the last trick of a tight hand is worth so much.
Bags and sandbagging
Every trick above the bid scores 1 point and also adds a bag to a running counter that carries between hands. When a side reaches ten bags it loses 100 points and the counter drops by ten, keeping any remainder. That is why deliberately taking extra tricks is a losing habit: five comfortable +52 hands quietly hand 100 points back. Some groups reset the counter to zero rather than carrying the remainder, so agree which before you start.
Nil and blind nil
A nil bid claims you will take no tricks at all: +100 if you succeed, -100 if you take even one. Blind nil, declared before you look at your hand, doubles that to +200 or -200, and most groups only allow it when your side is behind by 100 or more. A failed nil bidder's tricks do not count toward the partner's contract, but they do count as bags for the side, so a broken nil can hurt twice.
Reaching the target
The standard target is 500 points and the side that crosses it first wins; if both cross in the same hand, the higher score takes it. Many tables also rule that a side dropping to -200 loses immediately, which stops a hopeless game from dragging on. Shorter games to 300 are common, and some groups simply play an agreed number of hands and compare totals.
Where score sheets go wrong
Two mistakes cause most disputes. The bid is per side, not per player, so partners' bids are added together and the pair either makes the combined number or does not; a nil is the exception and is always scored on its own. And bags have to be tracked across hands, not just within one, so the sheet needs a dedicated bag column or the 100-point penalty gets missed entirely.
